This position is responsible for the development, administration, and supervision of cleaning and waste removal services for the Minnesota Zoo campus to ensure a clean, healthy, safe and inviting environment for the comfort and pleasure of guests, staff, and the well-being of the animal collection in support of our mission to connect people, animals and the natural world to save wildlife. The incumbent develops cleaning workplans in coordination with other Zoo leaders and onsite partners; hires, supervises, and trains custodial staff; manages budgets, supplies, methods, and equipment needed to implement a cost-effective cleaning and waste removal program; and ensures quality control standards are maintained. The incumbent must be able to operate fleet vehicles throughout the Zoo campus.
Duties include but not limited to:
Lead, supervise, hire, schedule, counsel, monitor performance, and direct work of all Building Services personnel so that staff are skilled and available as needed, collective bargaining agreements and Minnesota Zoo and State policies and procedures are implemented and appropriately enforced, all employment laws and regulations are implemented and enforced, and all employees and applicants receive equitable treatment.
Develop and implement training for staff so that employees are able to safely perform work, and the section is in compliance with all applicable state, federal, and Zoo regulations, policies, and procedures.
Develop and maintain a cleaning and waste removal program including methods, equipment, procedures, and scheduling so that a clean, healthy, and safe environment is maintained for the comfort and pleasure of the guests, staff, and the well-being of the animal collection.
Document and monitor costs so that labor and supply accounts are accurate and within department budget guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience providing lead work or supervising in a commercial building maintenance operation overseeing custodial cleaning practices, materials and methods
Experience operating, recognizing potential problems and making repairs and adjustments to commercial cleaning operation tools and equipment such as auto scrubbers, vacuums, wet/dry vacuums, extractors, pressure washers
Knowledge of building utilities maintenance and repair
Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of multiple shifts of employees
Ability to estimate material, supplies, and equipment needs, and to maintain an adequate supply
Ability to keep records, write reports, and evaluate cost and quality data.
Demonstrated ability to provide feedback, coaching and training to others including conducting group meetings.
Interpersonal communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate and work with colleagues and guests from different backgrounds with courtesy, respect, and interest in positive problem-solving
Computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and other business work order software applications sufficient to enter and save data, respond to requests, query and analyze data and prepare reports, presentations and training materials
Written and verbal communication skills are sufficient to prepare messages and materials and clearly explain, discuss and present ideas, recommendations, procedures, etc.
Organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple projects simultaneously, delivering results and meeting deadlines
Demonstrated ability to maintain a work environment that respects and values differences and diversity
Valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supervising employees in a 24/7/365 recreation and service environment
Experience supervising employees in a public sector union environment
Ability to prepare annual budgets for a department
Ability to provide prompt and accurate information to staff and guests with courtesy, respect and an interest in positive problem solving
Experience in snow removal
First aid/CPR certification
Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) Smart Salting Certificate
Experience in maintenance and minor repair of medium-sized motorized equipment
Experience working with a computerized maintenance management system
Experience conducting time and method studies
Commercial Driver’s License A or B
Physical Requirements
Endurance sufficient to perform tasks under the full range of Minnesota outdoor environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
Ability to frequently bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, reach upward, twist and have good lateral movement to inspect the following functions: dust, wipe, polish, sweep, clean and pick up trash from floors and under furniture
Ability to perform large amounts of walking and walk up and down stairs to ensure and facilitate the removal of trash
Ability to perform tasks requiring heavy use of arms, wrists, and exertion of upper body, arms and hands to perform duties
Ability to move up to 75 pounds
May occasionally be exposed to chemicals which may have a scent that is objectionable and/or noxious in nature
Able to work at least one weekend day and some holidays and to adjust work schedule periodically to interact with staff who work different shifts
Physical ability and mobility to walk an uneven terrain, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time
Ability to verbally communicate to exchange information
