This job posting will be used to fill four (4) Civil Engineering student worker positions for the summer of 2025. If these positions are not filled by Civil Engineering Student Workers, they may be filled by Students in other interest areas. Positions will assist and provide support to the Water Resources (3) and Planning - GIS (1) engineering offices in MnDOT District 2, by performing pre-engineering work as assigned by the supervisor. All position will work out of the Bemidji headquarters and will work 40 hours per week. Flexibility for the length of season will be considered by MnDOT, but June 4 - August 26, 2025 is an approximation term for this summer work opportunity.
Water Resouces: This position will provide assistance to the Water Resources and Environmental unit in the completion of visual inspections of culvert and drainage structures, assist in the design of drainage features on construction projects, operate ArcGIS to collect data, and complete field studies for proposed projects. This work will be completed most days in the field (outside) but also includes research, and some office work. Work Schedule: 8 hour days, Monday - Friday, 7:00 am or 8:00 am start time. GIS Planning: This position exists to assist in the production of GIS data and mapping for the district. Incumbent will utilize mapping software to plan, organize and develop clear and concise maps, and improve the detail and accuracy of older, previously produced maps. Incumbent will compile information to document trunk highway conditions and organize the data to produce reports to be used in highway planning. this position works mainly from an office setting. Following the training period, this position may have the flexibility to telework part time. Employee will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must be enrolled in a college, university, trade, or technical school in the next three (3) months with at least a 2.0 GPA.
Students must be enrolled in six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter credits; or for a non-credit granting institution, two (2) or more classes per semester/quarter.

Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who are currently enrolled as full-time students in Civil Engineering, Civil Technology, Construction management, Land Surveying or related fields of study.
Preference will be given to candidates who have knowledge and application of advanced mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience using mapping technology, data bases and cartographic design principles sufficient to produce quality maps.
Physical Requirements
Water Resources: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work outside exposed to the weather elements (both cold and hot) on a daily basis. The employee will frequently drive a motor vehicle in off-road conditions. Periodically, the employee will walk on even and uneven/sloping ground. The employee may work in high volume traffic zones in daytime conditions. The employee must frequently and continually rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting). The employee will operate testing equipment (using vision and hearing) under varying temperatures. The employee may frequently move up to 100 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying. The employee must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
Planning: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use wrists, hands, and fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
