DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Combustion and Emissions Systems Technical Specialist to join our team specializing in Engineering for Cummins Inc. in Columbus, IN.

Job Summary:

This position is for an OBD Leader within the Spark Ignition platform team. The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of spark-ignited engines, be familiar with diagnostic concepts for ETMs and CCMs, and have experience with engine testing, compliance and certification. Main responsibilities include collaborating across functional teams to drive development of OBD from requirements through to certification. The OBD Leader will be responsible for planning of all OBD relevant tasks, lead the OBD War Room and communicate updates to a broad audience.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

Stakeholder Collaboration : You’ll gather input and negotiate with various stakeholders, providing critical information, guidance, and recommendations to support project decisions and further analysis.

Decision-Making : You’ll make important decisions on short-term project details, such as conducting analysis, testing, and communicating with stakeholders, ensuring successful project progression.

Process Improvement : You’ll apply and enhance processes like Pre Program Planning (PPP) and Value Package Introduction (VPI), using tools related to thermal and fluid sciences to enable high-quality decision-making.

Project Leadership : You’ll independently lead smaller projects or own complex components, products, or systems, managing ambiguity and being fully accountable to the project team.

Execution and Development : You’ll execute established and emerging work processes and systems independently, while also leading the development and improvement of these processes across your functional area.

Team Coordination : You’ll coordinate and direct work among technicians and temporary student employees, assisting in knowledge transfer to less experienced engineers through direct or indirect management.

Technical Guidance : You’ll provide support and guidance to influence the technical direction within project teams, continuously developing proficiency in critical competency areas.

Specialization : You’ll operate as a recognized specialist in a specific discipline or product area within your immediate team, contributing expert knowledge and skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

Strong Understanding of Combustion and Emissions Science : Leverage your knowledge to interpret and predict combustion system performance, focusing on chemical energy conversion, exhaust pollutant formation, and using modeling and experimental tools.

Expertise in Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer : Apply your understanding of fluid and thermal systems to predict performance, utilizing modeling and experimental tools to address key system or component questions.

Proficiency in Thermodynamics and Energy Conversion Systems : Use your knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics to interpret and predict the performance of various energy conversion systems, including IC engines, gas turbines, and fuel cells.

Skills in Product Failure Mode Avoidance : Identify and mitigate potential product failure modes by understanding interfaces, functions, and interactions, and prioritizing potential failure causes to improve product reliability.

Competence in Product Function Modeling and Simulation : Utilize computational tools to predict product capabilities and impact design decisions, ensuring that products meet system, sub-system, and component level requirements.

System Requirements Engineering Abilities : Translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements, establish acceptance criteria, track requirement status, and assess the impact of changes on project scope, schedule, and resources.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.

Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.

Additional Responsibilities:

Diagnostic ownership allocation (MDL), development schedule planning, and execution management (8-step/3-step: Internal and external)​.  Supplement PCRA OBD leader by driving negotiations and schedule investigation.

Regulatory requirements assessment and planning (0.3 IUMPR, etc.)​.

Represent program in OBD War Room

OBD Demo Planning: Aging plan development & certification testing support (PCRA owns cert testing). Supplement SPI/PCRA OBD leader; investigations and remove roadblocks.

Deficiency Planning and Removal Strategy (DACTAR – Deficiency and concern tracking and removal)​

New Phase-In Planning for new programs​

Ensure diagnostic improvements in CPS are communicated to VPI; also advocate for VPI if CPS meets requirements

Represent EBU/SPI in Compliance (“C”) reviews and CWOBDIM forums​.
