The Maritime Land Systems & Sensor (MLSS) Manufacturing team of Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) is seeking a Staff Manufacturing Systems Engineer located in either the Baltimore or Charlottesville campus.
The MLSS Manufacturing Systems Engineering (MSE) team engages with low manufacturing readiness level (MRL) programs across business units to ensure manufacturing capabilities required for strategic applications are being developed and are ready for implementation into production.
The Manufacturing Systems Engineer engages with the MLSS business units during pre-proposal and proposal program phases to offer insight into higher yielding, novel, and evolving manufacturing processes. This position may require performing the manufacturing portion of a Manufacturing Readiness Assessment (MRA) as well as assisting other functions in their assessments. The MSE is responsible for leading cross-functional teams to develop the Manufacturing Plan per AS6500, which includes but is not limited to executing Affordability, Operations Planning, and Strategic Sourcing Efforts.
The Manufacturing Plan also involves the alignment of Manufacturing Capital, Internal Research and Development (IRAD), Manufacturing Technology Advancement (MTA) resources to the development of discriminating technologies including additive manufacturing, advanced packaging, automation/robotics, electro/optics, data analytics, and digital fabric.
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Interface with MLSS Business Unit to stay current with new concept and proposal programs
Technical interface for Business Unit integrated program teams (IPT) for projects that are MRL 8 or less
Lead for Manufacturing Technical Strategy to support Proposals
Lead the development of MRAs and Manufacturing Plans
Partner with Global Supply Chain and the IPTs in making smart make/buy/align decisions
Recommend design improvements to produce lower cost/higher performing products
Understand and translate state-of-the-art process capabilities and guidelines for product designers by interfacing with manufacturing subject matter experts
Develop discriminating IRAD and capital investment plans
Lead IRAD Projects (Design for Automation, Direct Attach Radiators etc.)
Develop cost models and perform affordability efforts to meet program cost targets
Work with Sector Infrastructure team to determine manufacturing locations for future program phases and develop Facility Transition Plans
The ideal candidate:
Is self-motivated, a leader, works independently, and is passionate about next generation RF sensor technology
Must be able to understand complex technical issues and frame them in context for program management leadership and functional Vice Presidents alike
Has excellent organizational, project management and communication skills

Staff Manufacturing Systems Engineer
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, science or other relevant STEM area and a minimum of 12 years of experience or a Master’s degree with 10 years of relevant experience (or 8 years with a PhD)
Manufacturing Engineering Experience
Experience leading or managing projects
Fluency in MS Office software applications.
Broad knowledge of processes and materials used to make RF Sensors
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret clearance. This requires US Citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications:
10 or more years of manufacturing process engineering related experience
2 or more years of Project Management Experience (Manufacturing Project Engineer, Integrated Project Lead, Facility Project Manager, Subcontractor Management)
Familiarity with Process Development, MRL Assessments, Risk and Opportunity Assessment and control methodologies such as Design of Experiment (DOE), Statistical Process Control (SPC), and 6 sigma concepts
Experience working with Global Supply Chain & Strategic Sourcing
Knowledge and experience with design and development of automated equipment
Understanding of factory costing methodology and process yield metrics
Basic understanding of concepts related to typical manufacturing systems such as: MRP, kitting, batch sizing, configuration control and work flow routings

Salary Range: $147,700 - $244,800
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
