This Position is for a Research Scientist - National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering with a public university work location in University, MS.

Position Description

The UM's National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering (NCCHE) is seeking Research Scientists with experience in the research areas of Computational Hydroscience and Engineering. This position involves working on current research projects and leading future research projects related to Developing Computational Models, Tools and Decision Support Systems Technologies for Agricultural Watershed Physical Processes, Water Quality and Ground Water Management; Developing Computational Models, Tools and Decision Support Systems Technologies for Dam-break flood modeling; Studying the impacts of land cover land use and climate changes on water quantity and quality, environmental public health and aquatic ecosystems sustainability; and/or Applying remote sensing and GIS and related spatial techniques to environmental modeling and assessment for water, air, coastal, ecological and public health applications.

Essential Duties/ Responsibilities

Numerical modeling for physical environmental applications such as watershed, hydrodynamic and atmospheric applications.

Developing surface and/or subsurface hydrologic and hydraulic models and verify/validate them using field observations and remotely-sensed data.

Assisting in developing computational Models, Tools and Web-based Decision Support Systems Technologies for Agricultural Watershed Physical Processes, Water Quality and Ground Water Management.

Assisting in Developing Computational Models, Tools and Web-based Decision Support Systems Technologies for Dam-break flood modeling.

Studying groundwater-surface water interactions including the effects of hyporheic flow and watershed infiltration and percolation.

Studying the impacts of land cover land use and climate changes on water quantity and quality, public health and aquatic ecosystems sustainability

Environmental data analysis, particularly in the use of satellite remote sensing data and climate and weather data assimilation for these purposes.

Scientific programming (e.g., FORTRAN, C++), statistical programming (e.g., R, Python, SAS), spatial analysis methods (i.e. Geographic Information Systems (GIS)) and satellite remote sensing.

Participating in and leading external research grant proposals.

Participating in and leading journal publications and scientific conference presentations.

The continuation of this appointment is dependent on satisfactory performance and the sustained availability of research funding.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Ph.D. in Computational Hydroscience and Engineering, or a closely related discipline. The PhD degree should be already received or about to be received at the end of the current semester.                       

Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

Experience in numerical modeling for studying physical environmental applications such as watershed, hydrodynamic and atmospheric applications.

Experience in writing peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Experience in scientific programming (e.g., FORTRAN, C++, Python, R).

Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills (both technical and non-technical).

Experience in CCHE numerical models is preferred.
