This position is located at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant *(IAAAP) in Burlington, IA.*

This position pays \$30-31/hour

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties, but not all duties performed for this position. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Observe and comply with all company and site-specific safety and project policies. Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
  • Provide input to Activity Hazard Analysis or Job Safety Analysis development.
  • Perform daily pre-inspection and on-going maintenance checks while operating equipment.
  • Operate all heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life according to all relevant policies and procedures.
  • Assists in creating a positive and supportive work environment; enforce a safe workplace.
  • Performs minor maintenance of operated equipment including, checking fluid levels, greasing equipment, and reporting major repair problems to supervisor.
  • Complete assigned training in a timely fashion

  • Understanding of grade/slopes.
  • Constant inspection and surveillance of surroundings before and during operation to ensure safe ground or slope conditions exist, as well as adequate distance observed for other equipment or personnel.
  • Communicate with others by all means possible (visible or radio contact) including interpreting hand signals to determine where materials are to be placed or loaded.
  • Perform duties efficiently and safely under direction of Foreman, Site Superintendent, or other responsible field/project management.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Willingness to work through adverse weather.
  • Willingness to perform some labor tasks as needed in addition to operating equipment.
  • Familiarity with basic erosion control installation methods and requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

High School Diploma/General Education Diploma (GED) or demonstrated proficiency in required tasks.

3 years of experience in heavy equipment operations and civil construction.

Experience operating loaders, rubber-tired backhoes, excavators, and dozers including material handling and grading.

Experience using Personal Protective Equipment.

Knowledge of OSHA regulations regarding excavation methods and practices.

Ability to read and adequately interpret load charts for associated heavy equipment, and manufacturer-approved attachments and read survey stakes for alignment and grading.

Must be willi g to function as a general laborer when needed.

Needs to be proficient on 3 or more pieces: Dozer, excavator with most common attachments, loader, water truck, haul truck, back-hoe, skid steer, Lull, etc.

Willingness to teach less experienced craft to become more proficient and knowledgeable with their operating abilities.

Basic knowledge of GPS systems and the willingness/ability to learn.

Familiar with most common soil types, materials, and the ability to work with them effectively.

Utility experience on how to perform one or more of the roles associated with utility installation safely, efficiently, and productively.

Including but not limited to: Excavate with track-hoe, run loader in a safe manner and know the process allowing them to be efficient, work with trench boxes, and bench and slope safely.

Load haul trucks safely and efficiently.

Operate in congested areas safely and efficiently.

Mobility to access multiple site locations as needed and willing to travel.

Possess or have the ability to obtain an OSHA 10-hour construction safety certification (the company will pay for this training).
