Overview

The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University is responsible for providing strategic leadership and executive oversight of the undergraduate experience for engineering students. Reporting directly to the Dean, this senior position ensures the academic success of engineering students while maintaining high standards of academic integrity and compliance with accreditation requirements. In close coordination with central offices on campus, the role oversees undergraduate advising, professional development activities, and international experiences for engineering students. The candidate must have the capacity to perform with a high degree of autonomy, possess superior interpersonal and communication skills, and garner respect from a wide array of faculty and students. A PhD is required along with significant experience in academic administration, teaching, and/or advising at the college level.



Responsibilities

Executive oversight of SEAS undergraduate advising, academic progress, and academic standing:
• Directs the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) First-Year advising program by supervising work of faculty advisers and undergraduate peer mentors.
• Works with Office of the Dean of the College and residential colleges on advising processes, advisor orientation, and placement determinations.
• Establishes measures of academic progress, tracks students' progress toward degree, and intervenes when adequate progress is not being made.
• Approves external courses for credit, advises students about external courses.
• Coordinates departmental academic policies and procedures among six engineering departments.
• Sits ex officio with Committees on Examinations and Standing and Course of Study to provide voice for engineering concerns involving student academic standing and curriculum.

 

Undergraduate awards, recognition, and events:
• Coordinates selection of winners of SEAS prizes and outside scholarships by identifying candidates, seeking nominations, and convening selection committees.
• Oversees organization and serves as host for SEAS undergraduate events including Class Day, greeting of first-year students, departmental Open Houses, information sessions, Princeton Preview.
• Works with Freshman Scholars Institute to select candidates for invitation, meets with BSE students in program, consults with FSI leadership on academic matters.
• Works with Transfer Program to approve transfer course credits and advise BSE transfer students on course selection and major choices.

 

Executive oversight of engineering student professional development activities:
• Oversees allocation of funding support for senior thesis and independent work research.
• Manages discretionary funds dedicated to student professional development.
• Works with several school-wide engineering student organizations (NSBE, SHPE, SWE, Tau Beta Pi, Engineering Council) to support their activities.
• Oversees organization of annual Science and Technology Career Fair and serves as genial host; serves as a contact for employers with opportunities for engineering students; maintains working relationship with Center for Career Development.
• Works with Fellowship Advising Office to advise BSE students on postgraduate fellowships; writes letters of support as requested.

 

Coordination of ABET accreditation procedures:
• Coordinates processes required for maintaining ABET accreditation in Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
• Attends national ABET meetings to remain current with ABET procedures and policies.
• Coordinates review process by submitting Request for Evaluation, reviews and uploads self-studies and transcripts, oversees other logistical matters relating to the visit; works with programs to prepare for evaluation visits.
• Works with team chair assigned by ABET to coordinate arrangements for evaluation visit; attends Institutional Representatives prior to visit; serves as host during visit.
• Oversees follow-up responses after evaluation; works with programs to resolve shortcomings.

 

Promotion of international experiences for engineering students:
• Maintains working relationships with Office of International Programs to foster international study by engineering students.
• Motivates engineering students to study abroad through information sessions, advising meetings, and informational materials, based on knowledge of destination schools.
• Cultivates exchange and visiting-student relationships with overseas institutions, in conjunction with Study Abroad Program.
• Advises visiting overseas engineering students on course selection.

 

Other duties:
• Supervises work of the Undergraduate Affairs Administrator, maintains constant consultation between adjacent offices, conducts annual performance review.
• Responds to queries from prospective students interested in studying engineering at Princeton, maintains working relationship with the Undergraduate Admission Office.
• Informs students and faculty about SEAS general requirements through e-mail communications, web pages, and other media, considers requests for exceptions.
• Participates in ad hoc committees as appropriate.
• Participates in SEAS governance and decision-making by serving on Dean's Executive Committee and taking part in discussions of curricular initiatives, programs, policies, and facilities.
• Participates in meetings of the SEAS Undergraduate Affairs Committee chaired by vice-dean.



Qualifications

Required qualifications:

• PhD and 10+ years of work experience required.

• Significant experience, at least 7 years, in academic administration, teaching, and/or advising at the college level.
• Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in both writing and speaking with a diverse array of people. Inherently collegial and service oriented.
• Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse student population.
• Ability to successfully manage multiple competing priorities in a fast paced collaborative environment.
• Excellent organizational skills, tact, discretion and judgment.

 

Preferred qualifications:

• Familiarity with Princeton University campus resources, systems, curriculum, and policies a plus.
