Job Summary

KBR is seeking a Mechanical Designer to support an Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) contract under the KBR Research and Development Program. This role provides design and manufacturing support for AFIT graduate students and faculty across six academic departments, assisting in the development of research-related components and assemblies. This is a full-time, on-site position located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design and manufacturing process of parts and assemblies using CAD software, paper sketches, and verbal instructions

  • Collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to develop custom mechanical components for research projects

  • Create detailed blueprints with accurate dimensions, tolerances, and material specifications

  • Utilize Microsoft Office for basic documentation and troubleshoot basic computer-related issues

  • Support prototype fabrication and manufacturing by working closely with machinists, technicians and engineers

  • Ensure designs meet engineering standards and research requirements while optimizing for manufacturability

Work Environment:

  • Location: On-site

  • Travel Requirements: Minimal 0-20%

  • Working Hours: 10hrs/day, 40hrs/week

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field; OR

  • Associate degree/Vocational certificate in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Engineering, or related field; OR eight year's experience in mechanical design or manufacturing

  • Proficiency in 3-D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software such as SolidWorks, Fusion, Inventor, or similar programs.

  • Familiarity with basic precision measuring tools, including calipers, micrometers, gauge pins, and similar instruments.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with machining processes, including CNC programming and manual machining

  • Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and engineering documentation standards

  • Knowledge of rapid prototyping techniques, 3D printing, and reverse engineering

  • Extensive experience with SolidWorks.
